Postulavi patrem meum dedit mihi, gentes in haereditatem: Alleluia. Ego dormivi, et somnum cepi, et resurrexi: quoniam Dominus suscepit me: Alleluia.

I am who I am, and my counsel is not with the wicked: but my will is in the law of the Lord: Alleluia. I asked my Father, and he gave me the nations for an inheritance: Alleluia. I slept, and took a nap, and arose: for the Lord took me up: Alleluia.

Matins text for Easter Sunday, derived from Exodus 3: 14

Requiem Mass

I. Introitus

Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine, et lux perpetua luceat eis. Te decet hymnus, Deus, in Sion, et tibi reddetur votum in Jerusalem. Exaudi orationem meam, ad te omnis caro veniet. Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine, et lux perpetua luceat eis.

Rest eternal grant to them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. A hymn befits thee, O God in Zion, and to thee a vow shall be fulfilled in Jerusalem. Hear my prayer, for unto Thee all flesh shall come. Rest eternal grant to them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them.

II. Kyrie

Kyrie eleison. Christe eleison. Kyrie eleison.

Lord have mercy, Christ have mercy, Lord have mercy.

III. Dies Irae

Dies irae, dies illa solvet saeclum in favilla, teste David cum Sibylla.

Day of wrath, that day shall dissolve the world into ashes, as David prophesied with the Sibyl.

Quantus tremor est futurus quando judex est venturus cuncta stricte discussurus.

How great the trembling will be, when the Judge shall come, the rigorous investigator of all things!

Tuba mirum spargens sonum per sepulcra regionum coget omnes ante thronum.

The trumpet, spreading its wondrous sound through the tombs of every land, will summon all before the throne.

Death will be stunned, and nature too, when all creation shall rise again to answer the one judging.

Liber scriptus proferetur in quo totum continetur, unde mundus judicetur.

A written book will be brought forth in which all shall be contained and from which the world shall be judged.

Judex ergo cum sedebit quidquid latet apparebit, nil inultum remanebit.

When therefore the Judge is seated, whatever lies hidden shall be revealed, no wrong shall remain unpunished.

What then am I, a poor wretch, to say? Which protector shall I ask for, when even the just are scarcely secure?

Rex tremendae majestatis, qui salvandos salvas gratis, salve me, fons pietatis.

King of terrifying majesty, who freely saves the saved: Save me, fount of pity.

Recordare, Jesu pie, quod sum causa tuae viae, ne me perdas illa die.

Remember, merciful Jesus, that I am the cause of your sojourn; do not cast me out on that day.

Quaerens me sedisti lassus, redemisti crucem passus, tantus labor non sit cassus.

Seeking me, you sat down weary; having suffered the cross, you redeemed me. May such great labour not be in vain.

Juste judex ultionis donum fac remissionis ante diem rationis.

Just Judge of vengeance, grant the gift of remission before the day of reckoning.

Ingemisco tamquam reus, culpa rubet vultus meus, supplicanti parce, Deus.

I groan, like one who is guilty; my face blushes with guilt. Spare thy supplicant, O God.

You, who absolved Mary and heeded the thief, have also given hope to me.

My prayers are not worthy, but thou, good one, kindly grant that I should not burn in the everlasting fires.

Grant me a favoured place among thy sheep, and separate me from the goats, placing me at thy right hand.

Confutatis maledictis flammis acribus addictis: voca me cum benedictis.

When the accursed are confounded, consigned to the bitter flames, call me with the blessed.

Oro supplex et acclinis, cor contritum quasi cinis, gere curam mei finis.

I pray, suppliant and kneeling, my heart contrite as if it were ashes, protect me in my final hour.

Lacrimosa dies illa qua resurget ex favilla judicandus homo reus. Huic ergo parce, Deus.

O how tearful that day when the guilty shall rise from the embers to be judged. Spare them then, O God.

Pie Jesu Domine, dona eis requiem.

Merciful Lord Jesus, grant them rest.

IV. Offertorium

Domine, Jesu Christe, Rex gloriae, libera animas omnium fidelium defunctorum de poenis inferni, et de profundo lacu: libera eas de ore leonis, ne absorbeat eas tartarus, ne cadant in obscurum, sed signifer sanctus Michael repraesentet eas in lucem sanctam, quam olim Abrahae promisisti et semini ejus.

Lord Jesus Christ, King of glory, liberate the souls of all the faithful departed from the pains of hell and from the deep pit. Deliver them from the lion's mouth; let not hell swallow them up, let them not fall into darkness: but let Michael, the standard-bearer, bring them into the holy light, which once Thou promised to Abraham and to his seed.

Sacrifices and prayers of praise, o Lord, we offer to you. Receive them, Lord, on behalf of those souls whom today we commemorate. Grant them, O Lord, to pass from death unto life which once thou promised to Abraham and to his seed.

V. Sanctus and Benedictus

Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus, Dominus Deus Sabaoth! Pleni sunt coeli et terra gloria tua. Osanna in excelsis. Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini. Osanna in excelsis.

Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Hosts. Heaven and earth are full of Thy glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. For unto Thee all flesh shall come.

VI. Agnus Dei

Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, dona eis requiem. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, dona eis requiem sempiternam.

Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, grant them rest. Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, grant them everlasting rest.

VII. Libera me

Deliver me, Lord, from eternal death, on that terrible day: when the heavens and earth will be shaken; when you will come to judge the age with fire. I am made to tremble, and I am afraid, since trial and anger are coming.

That day, a day of anger, disaster and sorrow, that day, a mighty day, and one exceedingly bitter. Give them eternal rest, Lord, and may light perpetual shine upon them.

Regina coeli, laetare, alleluia.

Quia quem meruisti portare, alleluia.

Resurrexit sicut dixit, alleluia.

Ora pro nobis Deum, alleluia.

Queen of Heaven, rejoice, alleluia.

For he, whom you did merit to bear, alleluia.

Has risen as he said, alleluia.

Pray for us to God, alleluia.

Ave maris stella,

Dei Mater alma,

atque semper Virgo,

felix caeli porta.

Hail, O Star of the ocean,

God's own Mother blest,

ever sinless Virgin,

gate of heavenly rest.

Sumens illud Ave

Gabrielis ore,

funda nos in pace,

mutans Hevae nomen.

Taking that sweet Ave,

which from Gabriel came,

peace confirm within us,

changing Eve's name.

Solve vincula reis,

profer lumen caecis

mala nostra pelle,

bona cuncta posce.

Break the sinners' fetters,

make our blindness day,

Chase all evils from us,

for all blessings pray.

Sit laus Deo Patri,

summo Christo decus,

Spiritui Sancto,

tribus honor unus. Amen.

Praise to God the Father,

honour to the Son,

in the Holy Spirit,

be the glory one. Amen.
